Liquid ring vacuum pumps

Flüssigkeitsring-Vakuumpumpen

In a liquid ring vacuum pump, an impeller rotates eccentrically in a housing partially filled with liquid. Centrifugal force forms the liquid into a rotating ring that seals the spaces between the blades. Because the impeller sits off-centre, these spaces become larger and smaller again with every revolution: the gas is drawn in, compressed and discharged together with part of the liquid.

The operating fluid, usually water, absorbs the heat of compression and makes the pump insensitive to humid, dusty or condensing gases. This explains its widespread use in the chemical industry, in food and beverage production, in paper mills, power plants and in plastics extrusion. The ultimate pressure depends on the temperature of the operating fluid.
