Roots vacuum pumps

Wälzkolben-Vakuumpumpen

In a Roots vacuum pump, two figure-of-eight-shaped pistons rotate in opposite directions in a housing. They touch neither each other nor the wall, and the narrow gaps remain dry. The gas is enclosed between the pistons and the housing and conveyed to the outlet side without any operating fluid being needed in the pumping chamber.

Roots pumps convey large quantities of gas but on their own build up only a limited pressure difference. They therefore generally work together with a backing pump and multiply its pumping speed in the medium and rough vacuum range. Such pump systems are found in coating technology, on vacuum furnaces, in drying, in leak detection and in semiconductor manufacturing.
